Material properties and classification

Titanium capillaries are made from high-precision industrial-pure titanium and ultrafine-grained titanium alloys. They feature low density (4.51 g/cm³), excellent corrosion resistance (to chloride, acidic and alkaline media), high specific strength, and good biocompatibility.

Common industrial-pure titanium grades include GR1 and GR2, with titanium contents >99.6% and oxygen contents ≤0.2%. They exhibit excellent plasticity (elongation ≥25%) and are suitable for thin-wall precision molding. TA9 (Ti-0.2Pd) offers improved corrosion resistance to reducing acids such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid.

Titanium alloys include Ti-6Al-4V for high-strength applications (tensile strength ≥895 MPa), and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn for ultra-low-temperature environments of -253°C. Vacuum melting is required to control impurity levels (Fe ≤ 0.3%, N ≤ 0.05%)

Production method

Seamless titanium square tube production process

1. Billet Preparation:

Smelting and Ingot Casting: Titanium sponge is melted two to three times in a vacuum consumable arc furnace (VAR) to produce homogeneous ingots 300-600 mm in diameter. Impurity elements are controlled (Fe ≤ 0.3%, N ≤ 0.05%).

Billing and Rolling: Forging into 150-200 mm round billets, hot rolling into 80-120 mm rough tubes, with a deformation of 20%-30% per pass at a temperature of 850-950°C (below the β-transformation point).

2. Precision Forming:

Cold Drawing/Cold Rolling to Square: Multiple cold drawing passes are used, gradually transitioning to a square shape (corner radius R ≥ 2 times the wall thickness) through a circular die. Single-pass deformation is ≤ 15% to avoid cracking. Alternatively, roll forming is used, using multiple sets of profiled rollers to continuously roll the round tube into a square tube, with a dimensional accuracy of ±0.1 mm. Online Annealing: Vacuum annealing (500-700°C, hold for 1-2 hours) is performed after every 2-3 deformation passes to eliminate work hardening and restore plasticity.

3. Finishing and Testing:

Cutting to Length: Laser or plasma cutting, length tolerance ±5mm;

Surface Treatment: Pickling (HF+HNO₃ solution) to remove oxide scale, electrolytic polishing to a surface finish of Ra ≤ 1.6μm;

Non-destructive Testing: Ultrasonic testing (to detect internal defects) and hydrostatic testing (1.5 times the working pressure, hold for 30 seconds, no leakage).
